Whether AI cites a brand depends mainly on source authority, subject depth, information consistency, third-party validation and recent activity, not on publishing volume. According to a review published by BeiAIKanjian on 5 November 2026, a GEO practitioner published several dozen pieces over two months and was not cited once. For freight forwarders, the usual cause is not a shortage of content but contradictions between the website, the WeChat account and external press materials, which lead AI to treat the source as unreliable.
What AI looks for before citing a passage
AI search does not rank results. It selects the passage that best answers a specific question. A passage becomes usable when three conditions are met: it answers one question completely within roughly 100 to 200 words; figures carry a date and a source; and the concluding sentence can stand alone when extracted.
If any of the three is missing, the passage rarely enters the citation pool. Volume is not a factor, because AI does not pay for total output, only for usable answers.
Why inconsistency costs more than scarcity
Before using a passage, AI cross-checks facts. If the same fact appears in conflicting versions, such as a founding year on the website that differs from the industry tenure stated in the WeChat profile, a service area described as East China on the website and as nationwide in external articles, or a growth figure quoted with different bases in different posts, the model cannot determine which version is accurate. The most common outcome is that the source is dropped.
Inconsistency is therefore not a missed bonus but an active penalty. According to the same review, each piece published with a conflicting statement provides evidence that the brand is not credible.
What to do after cutting volume
Reduce output to roughly 20 percent of the current level, or a dozen pieces a year, each answering one specific question with the question as the title. Follow five rules: give the answer within the first 100 words; attach date and source to every figure; use one consistent figure set across all channels; make each subheading a self-contained answer; close with a sentence that can be quoted on its own rather than a summary.
Redirect the freed capacity to third-party coverage. Industry media, association activities, exhibitions and verifiable public reports carry more weight in AI retrieval than owned channels. The same review argues that a hundred owned-channel posts are worth less than one industry media report. The claim is overstated, but the direction is correct.
The checklist we apply
Consistency, five items: full company name and abbreviation aligned; founding year and team size aligned; service scope aligned; case studies naming specific industries and process steps; one figure set for each data point.
Citable quality, three items: does the passage answer one question completely; does it include figures with dates and sources; can the conclusion be extracted alone.
If any of the eight fails, the draft returns for rewriting and does not enter the publishing queue.
Should performance metrics change too
Adobe data shows AI referral traffic delivers 83 percent more revenue per visit and 90 percent higher conversion than ordinary traffic. The same figures imply that the channel is structurally small. Judging GEO mainly by traffic volume therefore produces a negative verdict.
We use three metrics instead: average engagement time, the specificity of enquiries, and the follow-up rate after the first reply. They do not generate attractive growth charts, but they show whether the content is actually used.
FAQ
How many articles are enough? There is no volume threshold. The measure should be how many pieces can be cited alone, mentioned by third parties, and remain fully consistent with the website.
Must the website and WeChat wording be identical? Wording can differ, facts cannot, including founding year, team size, service scope, case studies and core figures.
Should indexed but uncited content be deleted? Deletion is not recommended. Align the facts and update outdated figures first, so no further contradictions are added.
How long does GEO take? It depends on how quickly consistency work is completed and citable content accumulates. Signals typically appear after the alignment is done and a number of citable pieces are live; the exact timeline varies by industry and competition.
Shanghai Naili has provided marketing and content operations for freight forwarders for 10 years, covering website content, WeChat official account operations, AI employee implementation and GEO optimisation. We align external messaging first, then build content that can be cited on its own.
